Karys & Marian in South America

Once again we decided to go the long way... From the town of Cachora roughly 125 Street Km away from Cusco to the ruins of Choquequirao and further on to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. A lot of thinking and preparation went into the trip. But no matter how much you plan beforehand - 125 Km and several ascends of more than 1000 m waited to be handled by us.  We started of from the town of Cachora. Unfortunately Karys wasn´t feeling good on our first day. We reached the end of the street where we found a little campsite and peruvian restaurant run by an older couple. We ended up staying two days before Karys stomach felt better and her gelly legs regained some strength. From here we had to descend a dizzying mountain slope and cross a river before ascending the better part of 800 m to our camp on Doña Eufemias lawn. After being invited to Moya and Stuart's wedding we decided to add on a few days and enjoy Karys' birthday on the Caribbean island of Aruba. The island is fairly small but displays all the feats you expect of an island in Paradise. Pristine beaches with crystal clear water and palm trees, relaxed natives and sun, sun, sun.  We enjoyed the wedding ceremony on the beach at sunset and the evening party afterwards with Moya and Stuart's friends and family. The next days we used to visit different parts of the island, sail a catamaran, check out the local butterfly farm and hang on the beach. It was a great trip, without our heavy backpacks, seeing familiar faces and just enjoying the sun. In the vicinity of Arequipa lies the Canyon de Colca which is considered the 4th deepest canyon in the world. We decided us to hike through the canyon eventhough this means descending and ascending over 1000 m. Several Tours offer Treks through the Canyon but once again we decided to go solo and the other direction to the Tours which was the best decision we could have made. On the last day of our hike for about half an hour we passed many of these organized groups. In the canyon one can find small villages every few kilometres that offer beds, groceries and restaurants. We decided to sleep in our tent on one of the many old Inka terraces. A truly amazing site to spent a night!
