La Paz

We arrived in La Paz via bus from Cochabamba on a Saturday night. Unfortunately the welcome was anything but warm. Our bus got stuck in serious traffic, we moved about a block and a half in over an hour. Additionally a hailstorm set in. So we decided to hop off the bus before arriving at the terminal and found a cheap place for one night in El Alto, La Paz's twin city.

The next morning the world looked alot more friendly fortunately and we descended into La Paz per micro in best weather. La Paz is a buzzing big city with a lot of food options and things to see. At the same time the city manages to remain relaxed and not overwhelm one with it's liveliness. Public transport throughout the city is mostly facilitated by micros and additionally a system of cable cars is under construction with 5 lines running already. A scenic, cheap and rapid way to move through the city.

The surroundings of La Paz are equally interesting. High mountains and stunning landscape like the "Valle de la luna" (Moon Valley) and "Muela del Diablo" (Devils tooth) are within hiking distance and offer a welcome contrast to the jungle of streets and houses.

Wie so oft erreichten wir an einem Samstag Abend per Bus La Paz. Unser Willkommen sollte kein herzliches sein. Waehrend wir in heftigem Verkehr stecken blieben und uns nur etwas mehr als einen Block in einer Stunde bewegten, setzte auch noch uebler Hagel ein. Kurzum entschlossen wir uns also noch vor dem Busbahnhof in El Alto, der Zwillingsstadt von La Paz, aus dem Bus zu steigen und uns eine guenstige Unterkunft fuer die Nacht zu besorgen. 

Am naechsten morgen sah die Welt um Einiges freundlicher aus, und bei bestem Wetter erreichten wir per Micro das Tal in dem La Paz liegt. La Paz ist eine lebendige Stadt mit vielen Moeglichkeiten auf der Strasse zu essen und noch mehr zu sehen. Gleichzeitig schafft die Stadt es entspannt zu sein und der Trubel auf den Strassen stresst nicht. Der oeffentliche Nahverkehr wird hauptsaechlich durch eine Unmenge an Micros gestemmt. Zusaetzlich befinden sich auch mehrere Seilbahnlinien im Bau von denen 5 bereits fertiggestellt sind. (Dopplmayer aus der Schweiz - wie im Skiurlaub). Diese Art der Fortbewegung ist guenstig, schnell und bietet wunderschoene Panoramen.

Das Umland von La Paz kann sich ebenfalls sehen lassen. Hohe Berge und beeindruckende Landschaften wie das "Valle de la luna" (Tal des Mondes) oder "Muela del Diablo" (Teufelszahn) sind nicht weit entfernt und bieten eine willkommene Abwechslung zum lebendigen Grossstadtjungel.
