Iquitos

Having spent a lot of time in the mountains recently, I fancied a bit of a change of scenery and decided to go to the biggest city that can't be reached by car but solely by boat or plane. Iquitos in the peruvian Amazon. 

I went to Pucallpa to journey to Iquitos on a freighter that has 2 decks for goods and 2 decks for people. The principle is simple. You pay for your ticket, hang up your hammock on the deck and slowely cruise the Amazon for 5 days before arriving in Iquitos. There are 3 meals a day and you just need a tupperware container and a spoon and fork. The kitchen crew's on these ships are traditionally gay/transgender and I got to know the cook of my boat. Together with 2 guys from Iquitos and another brazilian we had a good time sipping beers and smoking cigarettes on board.

I introduced some of my ship mates to my Reballdo boxing training device which fascinated all of them and helped killing the days on the cruise. 

Iquitos itself is a crazy place. It's hot and humid, massive rats frequent the markets and there are nearly no cars - only Mototaxis. The day we arrived was election sunday in Peru and in the evening the whole city including us got drunk. Being hungover at 35 Celsius and 95 % humidity is even worse than at home!

Nachdem ich zuletzt viel Zeit in den Bergen verbracht habe, hatte ich Lust auf einen Tapetenwechsel und entschied mich in die groesste Stadt der Welt die nicht per Auto, sondern nur per Boot und Flugzeug zu erreichen ist zu reisen. Iquitos im peruanischen Amazonas.

Von Pucallpa aus bestieg ich ein Frachtschiff das 2 Decks fuer Ladung und 2 Decks fuer Passagiere hat. Das Prinzip ist simple. Du kaufst ein Ticket, haengst deine Haengematte auf und schipperst langsam 5 Tage lang den Amazonas hinab nach Iquitos. Dreimal am Tag gibt es Essen, alles was du brauchst ist eine Tupperbox und ein Loeffel bzw. eine Gabel. Die Kuechencrews auf diesen Schiffen sind traditionellerweise schwul und transgender. Ich freundete mich mit dem Chefkoch unseres Bootes an und zusammen mit 2 Jungs aus Iquitos und einem Brasilianer verbrachten wir die Zeit an Bordm mit Bierchen und Zigaretten.

An einem der Tage zeigte ich den Jungs mein Reballdo Box Uebungsgeraet. Sofort waren alle fasziniert und Reballdo half die Zeit an Bord totzuschlagen.

Iquitos selber ist ein verrueckter Ort. Es ist heiss, feucht, riesige Ratten laufen ueber die Maerkte und es gibt kaum Aotos, nur Motottaxis. Am Tag unserer Ankunft war Wahlsonntag in Peru und am Abend betrank sich die ganze Stadt inklusive uns auf den Strassen. Kater bei 35 Celsius und 95 % Luftfeuchte ist noch schlimmer als zu Hause.
